Concrete Leveling in Central Illinois & Indiana

SlabJacking Process

How Does Traditional SlabJacking Work?

Traditional SlabJacking is a tried & proven method for Lifting Settled Concrete that has been around for many Decades. In fact, HowellSlabJacking has Specialized in SlabJacking since 1989!

The basic idea is simple:

If the ground underneath a slab settles or erodes, empty space develops underneath the concrete. Once that support is gone, the slab begins to sink, crack, tilt, or separate from adjoining sections.

Traditional SlabJacking works by pumping material underneath the slab under pressure to fill those voids and carefully lift the concrete back toward its original grade.

At HowellSlabJacking, we have lifted 10’s of THOUSANDS of slabs over the past 35+ years throughout Central Indiana & Central Illinois.

WE LIFT SETTLED CONCRETE.

What Causes Concrete To Sink?

Concrete usually sinks because the base underneath it settles or washes out over time.

Some of the most common causes include:

  • Poorly compacted fill dirt
  • Water erosion under the slab
  • Downspout drainage issues
  • Freeze/thaw cycles
  • Rodent activity
  • New construction settlement
  • Heavy traffic or weight
  • Voids developing under the concrete

On newer homes especially, the ground can continue settling for several years after construction. That is one reason settled driveways, sidewalks, garage floors, patios, and porches are so common.

Our Traditional SlabJacking Process

1. Drill Small Access Holes

Concrete Leveling Near MeSmall access holes are carefully drilled through the settled concrete slab.

These holes allow us to pump material underneath the slab where support is needed. Proper hole placement is extremely important. The material must spread properly underneath the slab to fully support the concrete and fill the voids below.

This is one area where decades of real-world experience matters.

At HowellSlabJacking, we have Specialized in SlabJacking since 1989.

2. Pump Material Under The Slab

Concrete Lifting Near MeNext, we pump material underneath the slab under pressure to fill the empty spaces below the concrete.

As the voids fill, the slab gradually begins lifting back toward its original grade. Our goal is to:

  • Lift settled concrete
  • Reduce trip hazards
  • Improve drainage
  • Match adjoining slabs
  • Stabilize the base underneath

One thing many people do not realize is that concrete is NOT always supposed to be perfectly level. Driveways, patios, walks, and porches are often intentionally pitched away from the structure so water drains properly.

An experienced SlabJacker knows the difference.

3. Patch The Holes & Clean Up

Concrete Raising Near MeOnce the slab is properly supported and lifted, the access holes are patched and the work area is cleaned up.

In most cases, the concrete can be used immediately after the SlabJacking is complete.

That is one reason Traditional SlabJacking is often much faster and more affordable than tearing out and replacing concrete.

Why Many Property Owners Choose SlabJacking Instead Of Replacement

Replacing concrete is expensive, messy, and time consuming.

In many cases, Traditional SlabJacking can:

  • Cost far less than replacement
  • Be completed in less than a day
  • Help avoid major demolition
  • Allow immediate use of the concrete
  • Preserve existing concrete
  • Correct settled slabs without tearing them out

Ironically, many of the slabs we lift were originally poured by professional concrete contractors.

Nothing is permanent. Everything eventually requires maintenance. That is simply the nature of concrete and soil movement over time.

Traditional SlabJacking Vs Poly Foam Lifting

Today there are several different methods used for Lifting Settled Concrete.

One newer method uses expanding polyurethane foam, often referred to as PolySlabJacking or Poly Foam Lifting.

Traditional SlabJacking and Poly Foam Lifting both have pros & cons.

The most important factor is not simply the material being used.

The most important factor is the experience of the contractor performing the work.

The contractor must understand:

  • where to place injection holes
  • how material spreads underneath slabs
  • how different slabs react while lifting
  • how to properly support the slab underneath
